“An acutely observed family drama with bone-chilling suspense.” —People

“Jewell teases out her twisty plot at just the right pace, leaving readers on the edge of their seats. Her multilayered characters are sheer perfection, and even the most astute thriller reader won’t see where everything is going until the final threads are unknotted.” —Booklist, starred review

“Sharply written with twists and turns, Jewell’s latest will please fans of Gone Girl, The Girl on the Train, or Luckiest Girl Alive." —Library Journal

Ellie Mack was the perfect daughter. She was fifteen, the youngest of three. She was beloved by her parents, friends, and teachers. She and her boyfriend made a teenaged golden couple. She was days away from an idyllic post-exams summer vacation, with her whole life ahead of her.

And then she was gone.

Now, her mother Laurel Mack is trying to put her life back together. It’s been ten years since her daughter disappeared, seven years since her marriage ended, and only months since the last clue in Ellie’s case was unearthed. So when she meets an unexpectedly charming man in a café, no one is more surprised than Laurel at how quickly their flirtation develops into something deeper. Before she knows it, she’s meeting Floyd’s daughters—and his youngest, Poppy, takes Laurel’s breath away.

Because looking at Poppy is like looking at Ellie. And now, the unanswered questions she’s tried so hard to put to rest begin to haunt Laurel anew. Where did Ellie go? Did she really run away from home, as the police have long suspected, or was there a more sinister reason for her disappearance? Who is Floyd, really? And why does his daughter remind Laurel so viscerally of her own missing girl?

The Family Upstairs, by Lisa Jewell was excellent and will read another by her. A complex situation of family relationships between their families and others. Explores
the inner most personalities between self and others. It is very intricate.

Why did Noelle have to die? Why didn't she pay for the crimes she committed against Ellie? Why didn't she suffer even half of what Ellie went through? Why did she have to get killed by Floyd? Why did she get an easy death? Why did Floyd get to choose his punishment? Why do criminals get to die instead of facing the law?

A really smooth read. Just enough characters to not get bored or overwhelmed. The plot moved along well and keeps you turning the pages. I blew through it in about 10 hours and the ending left me satisfied enough. Are there things I’d like to change? A few considering I’m a huge fan of comeuppance, but that’s the beauty of books, no? 9/10

This turned out to be quite a stunner. I’ve read lots of psychological thrillers and this one caught me off guard. Much more than your typical missing daughter plot. Scattered with hints of some shocking revelations to come.

I read this in one sitting, I just couldn't put it down. It was intense and heartbreaking and I still ended up loving every part. I'll be reading more books by Lisa Jewell but first I need a breather, and some tea for my frayed nerves?

It's been almost a year since I had read an adult book. This year, most of the books I read were YA. Also, this was the first thriller that I've ever read, which delivers a whole family drama. The first YA family drama that I read was Everything I Never Told You by Celeste Ng, and I was really moved by that. The same has happened with this book too.
This is the first book that I've read written by Lisa Jewell. TBH, I have never even heard of the author before. But as it turns out, she's a well established English author with many NY bestsellers to her credit. That is no wonder given her beautiful penmanship. And I'm sure she has crept up to my favourite authors list by now.
Then She Was Gone had been in my recommendations for so long, that at last, I decided to give it a try. This book had so much more than I expected. It's really haunting and is kind of giving me creeps.

(Enough babbling, and now getting into the review! )

"When you are the parent of a child who walked out of the house one morning with a rucksack full of books to study at a library a fifteen-minute walk away and then never came home again, then there is no such thing as overreacting"

Time stopped dead in tracks for Laurel Mack when Ellie, her sunshine of a daughter went missing on 26 May 2oo5. Years later, when she didn't reappear, the police closed the case, proclaiming her as a runaway. The family was asked to move on. But how could they when their 17 year old was somewhere out there? And moreover, there was no family to hold on to. Laurel was grieving on her own, by building up walls all around her, Paul, her husband has realized that they no longer fit together, and decided to end their marriage by a divorce. Hanna and Jake, Ellie's siblings, both moved out when they realized that their mom would never come back and even if she did, they will never be enough.
When the case is reopened again after a few years, and remains of Ellie's body is found, she's proclaimed dead. Soon after Laurel meets Floyd Dunn, a charming man, who is also a divorcee just like her. They begin to form a relationship, and soon, Laurel meets, his daughters, the silent and reserved SJ and Poppy.

You look just like my lost girl..... the dimple, the broad forehead, the heavy-lidded eyes, the way you tip your head to one side like that when you're trying to work out what someone's thinking

Poppy, has a striking resemblance to Laurel's lost daughter, only her daughter was 17 when she went missing and Poppy, she's six......

Laurel is determined to unearth the secrets behind all of this, and meanwhile, she discovers some disturbing secrets and details that she never noticed before............

This was a really disturbing at the same time, a compelling read. The whole story moves at a breakneck speed, and the reader will have no choice but to hold on to this bizzarre story. The novel is divided into five parts, each told from different timelines and from the perspectives of different characters. As the past and present merge, the tension builds up, the readers will become voracious and try to tear through the book.

Also, the book is deeply disturbing, so it might be good to know that before entering into it.

Building up an eerie atmosphere, Lisa Jewell has crafted a unique thriller, that will keep the readers engrossed

I honestly didn’t like this book. I read a lot and it’s not often I dislike a book recommended to me, but this one wasn’t very good. I found myself skimming chapters towards the end, bored. Bored is NOT what I should be feeling right before the big secret is revealed. Clearly some people liked it though, so maybe I’m odd.
